What is Kerfio Laser?

A modern laser workspace for makers

Kerfio Laser is a cross-platform workflow layer for diode and GRBL/FluidNC laser machines — image import, raster engraving, vector cutting, material profiles, preview, low-power framing, camera alignment and AI guidance.

It is built around common laser workflows and explains laser risks clearly, requiring confirmations before any dangerous action.

Import

Bring in PNG, JPG, BMP, WEBP images and SVG vector paths.

Assign

Set power, speed, line interval and passes per operation.

Frame

Run a low-power boundary frame so the job lands on the material.

Run

Start with safety confirmation and monitor progress and logs.

Two core workflows

Engrave images, cut vectors

Kerfio handles the two laser jobs makers run most — raster engraving from images and vector cutting from SVG — each with the settings that workflow needs.

Image engraving

Convert photos, logos and artwork into laser movement with grayscale, threshold or dithering.

Image import & preparation

Prepare photos and artwork inside Kerfio

Crop, resize, rotate and position on the bed, then tune brightness, contrast, gamma and sharpening before choosing an engraving conversion — so you rely on fewer external image tools.

Engraving conversion modes

  • Grayscale power modulation
  • Black/white threshold
  • Dithered engraving
  • Line art / edge engraving

Supported inputs: PNG, JPG/JPEG, BMP and WEBP today — TIFF and embedded-raster SVG later.

Layers & operations

Organise every path with colour and layer

SVG paths carry colour and layer information — Kerfio reads it and lets you assign a laser operation to each group, saving re-work when the file changes.

Layer & colour workflow

  • Import layers from SVG
  • Detect stroke colours
  • Assign settings by colour
  • Assign operation by layer
  • Preview colour-coded operations
  • Lock / hide layers
  • Reorder cutting sequence
  • Save presets
Material profiles

Start with a material, not a blank settings screen

Built-in material presets give a safe starting point for common materials — wood, acrylic, leather and more. Tune and save your own profiles.

Preview & framing

See the job before you fire the laser

Preview the bed boundary, placement, operation colours, cut order and estimated time, then run a low-power frame around the job — one of the most important practical laser features for preventing engraving outside the material.

Camera alignment

  • Live bed camera view
  • Snapshot capture & calibration
  • Overlay design on real material
  • Visual origin selection
  • Workpiece boundary detection
  • Shape alignment
Safety first

Confirmations before every laser action

Laser work carries real risk. Kerfio builds safety confirmations into every step that fires the laser — eye protection, fire and ventilation warnings are non-negotiable.

Eye protection, fire risk, ventilation, material safety and unattended-operation warnings are built in.

My engraving on 3 mm plywood is too faint — what should I change?
Try lowering speed or raising max power, and tighten the line interval. Run a material test grid first — you confirm the final settings.
