What is Kerfio CAD?

A practical, machine-aware design workspace

Kerfio CAD is not here to replace SolidWorks or Fusion 360 on day one. It is a focused workspace for simple 2D design, vector preparation, and measurement — useful because it connects directly to manufacturing.

Design a part, then move the same geometry into Kerf, CNC, laser, or 3D printing workflows without switching across a pile of disconnected tools.

Draw

Lines, shapes, arcs, points and text on a precise grid.

Measure

Distances, angles, bounding boxes and path lengths.

Validate

Catch geometry problems before they reach a machine.

Send

Push clean designs to Kerf, CNC, laser or 3D printing.

Sketch workspace

Everything in one familiar layout

Sketch is the first CAD workspace in Kerfio — a clean five-zone layout that beginners understand instantly and technical users can drive precisely.

Top toolbar

New, open, save, import/export, undo/redo, grid & snap toggles, and the unit selector.

Left drawing toolbar

Select, pan, line, polyline, rectangle, circle, arc, point, text, measure, and delete.

Center canvas

Infinite or fixed workspace with machine-bed template, grid, rulers, origin, and snap guides.

Right properties panel

Edit exact coordinates, sizes, rotation, stroke, fill, and document settings.

Bottom status bar

Live cursor position, selection count, zoom level, and grid / snap state at a glance.

Infinite or fixed workspace, machine-bed templates, rulers, an origin marker and snap guides — tuned for parts that actually have to be cut.

Drawing & measurement

Tools made for cut-ready geometry

A focused toolset that covers common 2D design needs for CNC and laser — and produces clean geometry that turns straight into machine operations.

Properties panel

Precise editing, not only freehand drawing

  • Start / end & center coordinates
  • Width, height, radius & diameter
  • Rotation and precise angles
  • Stroke colour & width, fill
  • Lock and visibility toggles
  • Document units & grid spacing

Objects & layers

Organise real projects for real operations

  • Object list with type icons
  • Rename, duplicate & delete
  • Per-object visibility & lock
  • Layer colour & ordering
  • Group / ungroup geometry
  • Machine-action friendly naming
Import & export

The formats makers actually use

SVG for vector shapes, signs and engraving. DXF for CAD/CNC exchange. Native .kerfsketch keeps every object and layer intact. Full 3D CAD import comes later.

Available

.kerfsketch

Native Kerfio sketch with full object & layer data.

Available

SVG

Import and export vector paths for signs & cutting.

Available

PNG preview

Export a clean preview image of your design.

Planned

DXF

The key CAD / CNC exchange format.

Planned

PDF vector

Pull vector geometry out of PDF documents.

Planned

Reference image

Place PNG / JPG underlays to trace over.

DWG stays secondary by design — export DXF from AutoCAD. STEP, IGES, STL, OBJ and 3MF matter in the wider ecosystem and arrive with the 3D roadmap.

CAD → manufacturing

One design, every machine

The reason Kerfio CAD is more than a drawing tool: your geometry flows straight into the CNC, laser, and 3D printing workflows that run real machines.

CAD → CNC

Send a sketch straight into Kerf with scale, units, names and layers preserved.

Detect drill points automatically
Recognise closed cut paths
Assign CNC actions in Kerf
Warn about unsupported geometry
Validation & cleanup

Catch problems before the machine does

Kerfio prefers to stop, warn, confirm and validate. The validation panel flags geometry issues before CAM or machine execution — and helps beginners understand why a design might not cut or engrave correctly.

Safety-first by design — the operator always stays in control of real machine actions.

Zero-length paths
Unsupported objects
Missing units
Objects outside the workspace
Open paths where closed are required
Duplicate overlapping geometry
Tiny stray segments
Text not converted to paths
Wrong scale after import
Self-intersections (planned)
AI Assistant

Design help, in plain language

The Kerfio AI Assistant explains tools in beginner-friendly language, helps you pick the right workflow, format, and settings, and clarifies warnings before you run a real job — in multiple languages.

  • Explain CAD tools and file formats
  • Suggest workflows for CNC, laser & 3D printing
  • Clarify validation warnings before you run

My SVG imported way too small — what happened?
That is usually a units mismatch. Your file is in inches but the sketch is in millimetres. Want me to rescale it ×25.4 and re-run validation?
